Week 2 Day 2 God's View of Pride (Part 1)

This is long so I am going to break it down into two parts.

Question 5.  What do the following verses reveal about pride?  How does pride manifest itself?  How does God view it?  What are the consequences of having a proud heart?

Psalm 10:4  (NKJV)

"The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God.
God is none of his thoughts."

Proud people will not acknowledge God for successes in their lives.

Psalm 13:23 (NKJV)

"Oh, love the Lord, all you His saints!
For the Lord preserves the faithful,
And fully repays the proud person."

Prideful people may not make it into heaven.

Proverbs 8:13 (NKJV)
"The fear of the Lord is to hate evil;
Pride and arrogance and the evil way
And the perverse mouth I hate."

Prideful people do not fear God.

Proverbs 11:2 (NKJV)

"When pride comes, then comes shame;
God with the humble is wisdom."

Prideful people can feel shame.  Just like in the life-builder story-the man was feeling shame for what he had done several years before.  He became humble and experienced revival when he confessed to the judge even at the risk of going to prison.

Proverbs 16:18  (NKJV)

"Pride goes before destruction,
And a haughty spirit before a fall."

Pride will only destroy you in the end.

Proverbs 29:23 (NKJV)

"A man's pride will bring him low.
But the humble is spirit will retain honor."

You will be rewarded more bt being humble.

Obadiah 3-Pride is deceiving.

Matthew 23:12 (NKJV)

"And whoever exalts himself will be humbled,
And he who humbles himself will be exalted."

If you humble yourself, you will be exalted.

James 4:6 (NKJV)

"But He e gives more grace.  Therefore He says:
'God resist the proud,
But gives grace to the humble."

All the more reason to be humble.

Question 6.  Pride is obviously not a casual issue with God.  Why do you think God is so opposed to human pride?

People who are full of pride think about themselves and their accomplishments.  They do not place God first in their lives.

God should be glorified one hundred percent.  He is great and mighty and we should have his name and renown as the desire of our hearts all the time.  "Those who possess a God-glorifying attitude that allowed Him to assume a definite position in their personal lives that can't help becoming conspicuous." (Beth Moore)

In my case this is not true.  God has revealed himself too many times for me to count.  However, I have other things on my mind that I tend to ignore what God is doing around me.  For example. on my commute I can be focusing on the drama going on at work.  On my hour commute I should be glorifying God rather than focusing on the gossip and rumors.

Pride is a dangerous enemy and is the biggest obstacle when it comes to glorifying God.  It is human nature to be the best in what we do.  While it is good to want to do a good job in our lives, it can be harmful in the long run.  While I was in High School, I  ran on the track team.  I was neither the fastest of the slowest-I usually finished in the middle of the pack.  There was a female runner from another school who was undefeated in the mile.  She carried the attitude that nobody would ever beat her.  During the state championship. she finished second in her race.  She would not accept the fact that she won a silver medal.  In her opinion, she lost.  She ended up throwing her medal away.  This type of pride led to her downfall.  People remembered her poor sportsmanship and forgot about her abilities.

Pride is another form of self-promotion.  It can make us captives in our lives and ruin friendships, careers, marriages and even destroys our characters.  Some people spend their entire lives trying to get to the top of the ladder.  When they finally reach the top, they realize that they had been climbing the wrong ladder.

Some people would rather share in God's glory than live in a God-glorifying life.  If we allow that to happen to us, we will not view pride as an enemy.  We will not allow God to free us from whatever is holding us in bondage.  Pride is dangerous.  It covers our heart so we will not be able to correct mistakes from the past.  When we are full of pride, we will think that we have no issues from our lives to address.  Pride makes us tell ourselves that we do not have any weaknesses.  God wants to talk to us, but with pride we do not like being told what to do.

Think of your life as a road.  You have to walk down it to reach freedom.  You come to a large rock that is blocking your path.  This obstacle is known as pride.  To seek freedom from pride, you must be willing to give the boulder a great shove and roll it out of the way.
