Week Four Day 2 The Call to Repentance

Question 6.

Matthew 3:2  And saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"

Matthew 4:17 "From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

What was the message preached by John the Baptist and the Lord Jesus?

Revival requires repentance.

Repentance involves returning to the Lord, forsaking sin and obeying God.

Both John the Baptist and Jesus were both preaching repentance.  John was a messenger of God.  He was not a madman just spewing nonsense.

Jesus was also saying to repent.  Since He is without sin, everything he preaches is truth.

Question 7.  Revelation 2:5

Remember therefore from where you have fallen, repent and do the first works, or also I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place-unless you repent.

Revelation 2:16  Repent, or else I will come to you quickly and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.

Revelation 2:21-22

21.  And I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent.
22.  Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds.

Revelation 3:2  Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent.  Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you like a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you.

Revelation 3:19  As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten.  Therefore be zealous and repent.

In the final book of the Bible, what is the recurring exhortation Jesus gives to the churches?

To repent, God loves all of us but will punishes those who do not repent.  For the ones who repent, there is forgiveness and salvation.

The Book of Revelation tells of the time when many people will go through the tribulation.  While many people will convert to Christianity, many others will be deceived by the anti-Christ.  Obviously Jesus wants everyone to become believers.  However, without repentance they are lost.

Question 8.  How often do you think a person must repent to be in a right relationship with God?

It is very easy to fall into sin.  And if you only recite the sinner's prayer when you first got saved and not make it into a daily routine it will be easy to fall into temptation and sin.

This has been true for me.  When I first got saved I was in college.  But I was tempted by the parties as well.  If I prayed for repentance I maybe would have been stronger in fighting the temptations of drinking.

I want to make it my daily habit to recite the sinner's prayer.  This one I found online:

Father it is written in your
Word that if I confess with
my mouth that Jesus is Lord
aqnd believe in my heart that
your raised Him from
the dead, I shall be saved.

Therefore, Father, I confess
that Jesus is my Lord.
I make Him Lord of my life
Right now.  I believe in my heary
that you raised Jesus from
the dead.  I renounce my
past life with Satan and
close to the door to any of
his devices.

I thank you for forgiving me
of all my sins.  Jesus is my
Lord, and I am a new creation.
Old things have
passed away; now all things
become new in Jesus' name.
Amen.

I can also recite Psalm 52 as a repentance prayer.

Acts 20:20 Testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, repentance toward God and Faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ.

The above verse states that for a person to become and remain a Christian they must turn away from their own ways and turn to Jesus for forgiveness and salvation.

Repentance is necessary for a Christian to have an ongoing relationship with God.  Satan will continually attack Christians, throwing temptation after temptation at them.  Some will easily fall victim and sin.  To maintain that relationship they must humble themselves and forsake their sin.

Question 9.

2 Corinthians 7:9-11

9.  Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance.  For you were made sorry in a good manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing.
10.  For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.
11.  For observe this very thing, that you sorrowed in a godly manner:  What diligence it produced in you, what clearing of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what vehement desire, what zeal, what vindication!  In all things you proved yourselves to be cleared in this matter.

The Corinthian believers did more than just claim to have repented.  What was the evidence that they were truly repentant in this matter?

They were convicted of their sins both by Paul and the Holy Spirit.
They repented by confessing their sins.
They were saved.
They were willing to forsake their sins.
They became blameless.

Based on this passage, how would you describe the difference between being remorseful over sin ("worldly grief") and being repentant (godly grief")?

Worldly grief means being upset about being caught in the sin.  For example, a wife might get involved in an affair.  She may get upset over it because she may be afraid of getting caught.  She may be afraid that her reputation will be ruined.  She may be afraid of getting divorced.  She may try to make excuses by blaming others.

Genuine repentance or gogly grief means the individual takes responsibility for his sin and does not put the blame on someone else.  He resolves not to sin again.  In the example of the unfaithful wife, she realizes  that she is hurting her husband and chooses to end the affair.

Lord, I am willing to forsake any sin that you show me, in order to have a pure heart and glorify you.

"The believer in Christ is a 'lifelong' repenter.  He begins with repentance and ends with repentance."-Jim Elliott
